Introduction
York Spiritualist Centre is affiliated to the Spiritualist National Union, the largest Spiritualist organisation in the UK, and in the world. We support the aims, policies and objectives of our parent organisation. The motto of the Spiritualist National Union is LIGHT, NATURE, TRUTH, and is used in their logo.

Spiritualist Philosophy
The Philosophy of Spiritualism is at the heart of the Spiritualist Movement. Spiritualists have no fixed creed, but they are asked to adhere to seven guiding principles.
"The Seven Principles", as they are known, form the cornerstone of Spiritualism. They are listed and explained on the "The 7 Principles" page. On the Spiritualist Philosophy page you will find more about how Spiritualists understand the concept "Philosophy", the role it plays in a Divine Service, and in the lives of individual Spiritualists. Spiritualism is seen very much as a way of life and a spiritual pathway, and is not just about seeking messages from the after-life.

Spiritualism as a Religion and a Science
Spiritualism is a legally recognised religion. It has been described as the oldest religion in the world, because our distant ancestors appear to have had a heightened awareness of the spirit world, and appear to have used their intuitive faculties more than most people do today.
Spiritualism is a science too, because it is based on evidence that can be demonstrated and scientifically tested. Honesty, openness and a relentless search for truth are the qualities that Spiritualists try to employ in every area of their lives.

Circles and Development
It is the responsibility of every Spiritualist church and centre to train a new generation of mediums and also to help any person who wishes it to develop his or her psychic and mediumistic awareness and abilities. We do this by means of Open Circles, workshops and courses. It is recommended that beginners start their psychic and mediumistic development by attending one of our Open Circles. On the separate "Circles and Development" page we explain for newcomers what to expect in an Open Circle, and how you can best help your own development. For just details of times and charges for our Open Circles, please click here.
The Centre runs many evening courses and weekend workshops. The courses usually take place on a Thursday evening, and generally last from 4 to 6 weeks. The weekend workshops usually take place on a Saturday and last from 10am to 4pm. Courses and workshops deal with all aspects of psychic and mediumistic development. Those that are advertised on distributed leaflets and on this website are open to the general public. It is a good idea to at least have had experience of working in an Open Circle before enrolling for a course or workshop. The courses are graded as suitable for beginner, intermediate or advanced students, and it is important for your own satisfaction that you take a course geared to your present level of psychic and mediumistic ability. If you are in any doubt whether a course would be suitable for you, please feel free to discuss the matter with the Committee Secretary, whose contact details you will find on the "Contacts" page, before making a booking. Alternatively you can speak to any member of the Committee at the Centre. To find out what Courses and Workshops are coming up, please click here, to go to the relevant section on the 'Events' page.

Psychic Awareness
It is often said that all mediums are psychic, but not all psychics are mediums. There is an important difference between psychic ability and mediumship, which is explained on the "Psychic Awareness" page. We are not wishing to denigrate what psychics do, and the helpful information that sincere and genuine psychics can give us from time to time. On that page you will find information about how you can develop your own psychic ability. It can be a useful preparation for mediumistic development. All mediums will use their psychic ability occasionally, but they aim to do more than that. Their main interest is in establishing a telepathic link with the mind of a "discarnate being" or person in the spirit world, and give evidence to show that the person, usually a loved-one known to the recipient of the message, is very much alive, and is aware of what is going on in our material world. It is important that we all know that our spirit, the vehicle of our consciousness, the inner, experiencing life of us, will not and cannot die. That is its nature.

The Different Forms of Mediumship
One of the main aims of Spiritualism is to demonstrate that we are all eternal beings, that we cannot die for the life of us, that life here has a spiritual purpose and that we all have a spiritual destiny. We do this through mediumship, the devoted and dedicated service that many mediums up and down our country, and in many other countries, give to us. Over time, York Spiritualist Centre aims to demonstrate all forms of mediumship, although by far the most commonly demonstrated form of mediumship in all Spiritualist churches and centres is known as "Mental Mediumship". We have four pages describing the different forms of mediumship. To access these pages, please use the links under "About Us" at the top of the right-hand column, where all the pages of this section are listed. Please use the links there to navigate directly to the page you wish to read in this section. Please use the menu-bar to navigate to a different section.
