This page deals with some of the Spiritualist magazines available both online and in paper copy, as well as other magazines that have an interest in psychic, mediumistic and spiritual matters that might be of general to Spiritualists.

Psychic World

Since the untimely demise of "Psychic News", the "Psychic World" newspaper is very much the voice of Spiritualism in the UK, and one of the best periodicals of its kind in the world. It is edited by Candy Taylor and the Editor in Spirit, Ray Taylor BA; Assistant Editor, Michael Colmer; Features Editor, John G Sutton.

It has regular columns by Philip Solomon, Stephen O'Brien, and many others; Book Reviews by Matthew and Samantha Hutton. America is covered by Marilyn Awtry and John E Otey; Australia by Victor Zammit; New Zealand by Ken Pretty. Other regular contributors include James Byrne, Wendy Stokes, Ray Jones, Graham Hewitt, Melanie Polley, David Robinson, Trevor Davey, etc. The newspaper is aimed at all Spiritualists and all others who are interested in the wider context of the spiritual world. It costs 80p and comes out monthly. We stock the newspaper at York Spiritualist Centre, but hurry if you want a copy, as it usually sells out quickly.

The newspaper has no dedicated website, although it does have a presence on Facebook, where you can find more information. Click here for that page.

Two Worlds

"Two Worlds" is a monthly magazine for Spiritualists. Emma Hardinge Britten founded the Two Worlds magazine in 1887. "Two Worlds" is now edited by Tony Ortzen. Tony has been involved in the paranormal for over thirty years. He has known and interviewed some of the world's leading mediums and acted as consultant to various publishing companies.

It runs a small website, which tells you little more about the magazine, but where you can subscribe, place an advertisement, order some Spiritualist books from the Two Worlds Publishing Company, particularly the Silver Birch collection, and find some useful Spiritualist links.

Spirit of PN

After the sad and much-lamented demise of "Psychic News", it was gratifying that the former editor of that paper, Susan Farrow, wasted little time in bringing out an online replacement which was cleverly called "Spirit of PN". It has not disappointed and carried some very interesting features that will be of interest to all Spiritualists. These articles are all archived for you to view.

Contributors have included Paul Brett, the assistant editor, Sue Farrow, the editor, Geoff Griffiths, Kay Hunter, Graham Jennings, Leslie Price, the former editor of PsyPioneer, Roy Stemman, author and maintainer of the blog - Paranormal Review, Lew Sutton, Jim Warwood, and Lis Warwood. PsyPioneer

PsyPioneer is an excellently monthly journal on the history of spiritualism, which is available by free subscription. Visit this page... to subscribe, or download all past editions of this fascinating and scholarly journal.

From their publicity:
"The Psypioneer Journal contains articles on the personalities and organisations of Spiritualism in bygone days. The Journal is now edited by SNU historian Paul Gaunt, but its scope is much wider even than Spiritualism. Much of its material is reprinted in full from old books and journals. Yet there is a large amount of literature which, in general, is not to be found in the Journal.

Absent first are papers from the Proceedings and Journal of the Society for Psychical research, even though it has published many essential investigations. This is because they are already available in electronic form through the SPR web site, free to SPR members. Moreover, by a small extra subscription, electronic versions of some other parapsychology journals, such as “Journal of Parapsychology” can be reached via the same site. www.spr.ac.uk Second is religious controversy. Spiritualists have been arguing about relations with mainstream Christianity for over 150 years Arthur Findlay, for example, might write an article asserting that Jesus was not historically attested - a Christian Spiritualist would reply that he was! Sometimes the same sources are quoted decade after decade. The Pioneer carries historical material about workers of all different beliefs, but is not directly interested in criticising any. The third omission, oddly enough, is of spirit teaching. This implies no criticism of the value of such teaching, often received in trance. It is just that it is not usually about events in the historical record. An unfortunate exception was the many predictions of No War immediately before the Second World War. Early in 2006, however, PsyPioneer did serialise the 1845 trance addresses through Andrew Jackson Davis called “Clairmativeness”. This is because they had been lost to later generations, and were an essential step in understanding how the Harmonial Philosophy of Davis developed.

Turning to the positive side, who do you find in PsyPioneer? You will find acknowledgment of Australians, from the sometime Prime Minister Alfred Deakin downwards, who contributed to this field, such as Richard Hodgson who was convinced of survival by the Boston medium, Mrs Piper, and Raynor Johnson who was so eminent he was asked to write Teach Yourself Psychical Research. You might play a part yourself, because as announced in the May 2005 issue, the Pioneer is compiling a census of Australian psychic periodicals; some are not in the National Library at Canberra (yet!), and volumes have turned up far away. In 2006, Elizabeth Pretty of the Spiritualist Alliance, Auckland (which has a historic library including volumes of Harbinger of Light, Australia’s premier psychic journal) began to direct material about New Zealand to the Pioneer, so expect to see the early days there much illuminated in the months ahead.

In general PsyPioneer Journal helps you to understand more about the workers of the past, and the organisations and publications through which they worked. Sometimes even the present day leaders do not know about them - they may just be names. It is not unknown for confusions to develop in the history, or for aspects of their work, which are not fashionable today, to be overlooked. The Journal tries to fill in the picture and restore it to its true colours."
