Beacons of Light
If we are all beacons of light, why can we not see each other?
We cannot and will not recognise the light in others until we recognise it within ourselves.
"What does it look like?" I hear you say.
It starts firstly as a small pinhead of light, as we grow and learn respect both for ourselves and that of others.
By acts of kindness, a bright smile as we pass a stranger, showing that we care, listening to a friend and giving comfort to those in need. These are all things that will help our light to shine.
We constantly strive to be better people, and we always will. This is how it must be.
But it is when we reconnect with the light of the Creator that we each see and experience the light within.
This is when we feel that joy, that unconditional love, that illumination.
I hope that one day you may experience that excitement, that recognition of your light, for then you will know that you too are a part of the Creator.
Truly a "BEACON OF LIGHT"
Written and read by Yvonne Craig and heard and appreciated by a Member of YSC at the Edinburgh Association of Spiritualists in Morrison St, where a warm welcome awaits anyone on holiday in Edinburgh. Our member writes:
"I liked the recognition of 'the light within' in this piece, and the understanding of the light and love of our creator, God, that is found within every soul, even if it is just a tiny spark. If we develop our inner light, it will be seen and recognised both by spirit people, and by those in this world who have developed their psychic and mediumistic gifts in tandem with their own spiritual development. 'The light within us' is how we shall be known and identified when we eventually move on to the spirit realms."

Negative or Positive?
a) Negative Thoughts
In times of crisis our immediate reaction is usually, "I don't believe it." Somewhere in our mind we dismiss it. Our first reaction ... disbelief. Then we bring in the blame with "if only" ... "if only I had known" ... "if only I wasn't in a hurry! ... "if only".
Our negative thoughts deplete our positive constructive energy just when we need it most. Our feeling of not being a worthy candidate can be transported into the minds of those we wish to impress. Honesty is valuable, but don't undermine yourself at all. One underestimates what capabilities we have. That's what experience is all about. You could be a genius in the making.
a) Positive Thoughts
When dealing with our positive side we need to radically change the "If only ... " to "It's only ... " - "it's only a scratch", "nevermind, we can always go another day". By minimising the problem, we allow our emotional side to re-establish balance and harmony. Being positive is good, but be sure we don't depend on our own strength of mind alone. It's not weak to ask for help. Remember God and His army of Angels are waiting in the wings, and their power is beyond our comprehension.
We can be taken to the very edge of despair, but our positive thinking will always rub off onto others. We are naturally community people, we like to share our predicaments, just like the miners in Chile did. Was that a miracle, or positive thinking as a unit? Against all the odds, their positive thinking wond the day. Why? Because they knew they never walked alone.
Written by Alice, October 2010, and read at our service on October 17th 2010 at which Jenny Peacock was the officiating medium. This piece was a response to a homework assignment for an ongoing course taken by Jenny, and Jenny used it to develop her own philosophy on negative and positive thinking. We have the choice whether to hold onto our negative experiences as burdens, or drop them and be uplifted by the positive experiences of our lives instead. Positivity is infectious, and as well as helping us, it will encourage others on life's pathway too.

Harmony
"Wisdom is to know the harmony of things, and joy to dance to its rhythym."
I remember this quote given in a talk by the Jesuit Fr Gerald Hughes, the man who made two long pilgrimages - to Rome and to Jerusalem - and wrote about them. I don't know its source; maybe he was its origin. As we pray, contemplate and meditate, we do gradually become aware of another reality that runs alongside our day to day reality. This reality is always peaceful, ordered, and harmonious, unlike our everyday reality, which is often fractured, incomplete and unsatisfactory. As we become aware of this other reality, we do, if we surrender to it, become joyful, because we know that whatever happens, everything will be all right. The wisdom that knows that this is the true and ultimate reality relies on our mindfulness to keep using this reality, and not our everday reality, as our main reference point. We can all know this peaceful, harmonious reality by meditating, praying and going within. This reality is our true home.

Personal development
I thought the world was against me,
For every step I took
A knock came my way.
I was angry and frustrated.
I thought of giving up
To keep the status quo.
But something deep inside me
Said be strong and keep the faith.
Your path is forged already.
Be patient and see what waits.
So I waited and grew stronger
And knowledge and skills came my way.
I developed determination and used it on my way.
For I would not falter.
But patience can be frustrating
And stressful for a while.
The tears would flow and anger take its toll.
But I kept the faith and waited for my time to shine.
I took every presented opportunity.
I learned and I waited.
I waited and I waited, I bided my time
While others around me shone.
For the waiting was worth it and now is my time to shine.
So here I stand at the beginning of a new and exciting challenge
And greet it with eagerness and trepidation,
My patience restored, my anger abated,
My faith much stronger, and more focused.
So now I await the next steps
To see what I have in store.
I greet it with a knowing smile, my trust in God assured.
My destiny a written book, the pages yet to turn.
So bring on all the challenges, the changes and the tests,
For I am strong and ready,
Having fulfilled one destined path.
